The Climb - ish
The Climb - ish
This is what happens when we have been on the road for too long...
It's only slightly embarrassing ;)

Stuck on the Runway
Stuck on the Runway
Sometimes we keep moving forward in life simply because we don't like where we are, and we don't want to go back to where we were.

Have you ever been on an airplane just before take-off? The pilot will come across the radio and say something like "Thank you for your patience, folks... We'll be taking off shortly. We're currently fourth in line on the runway..." It's so frustrating. Does it mean we won't get to go where we want to go? No. Does it mean we're going to crash and burn somewhere along the way? Of course not. It only means that it'll take few extra moments to arrive at our destination.

Sometimes we experience periods of time in our lives where we feel like we're in a holding pattern. We often take this time to complain and let everyone know how frustrated we are (I'm guilty). What we should be doing, is taking that extra time to prepare ourselves for the next stage of life. When that time comes, we will inevitably wonder why we didn't prepare more when we had the chance.

I'm currently working a job that I dislike very much. I find no fulfillment in what I do, and with that comes no sense of accomplishment. Having said that, I know I'm there for a reason and have every confidence that one day (soon!), I'll be able to do what I love. If I never had to work a job that was monotonous and dissatisfying, would I appreciate being able to do what I love for a living? Probably not. For that I'm grateful. Believe it or not, I'm thankful that I can experience how unfulfilling my current job is. This is because one day I will truly understand what a blessing it will be to spend all of my time pursuing my passions.

Until then, the only thing I can do is prepare myself for that next step. What is it that you want out of life? Take whatever it is that just came to your mind, and ask yourself what you're doing to achieve it. You don't like where you are, remember? And you obviously can't turn around... So keep moving. Make progress. Determine what it is that will bring you fulfillment, and go get it. Your plane is about to leave... don't miss it.

Give It All to You (Acoustic)
Give It All to You (Acoustic)

One Chance
One Chance
Do you remember when you were a kid? Do you ever remember thinking "I just can't wait until I'm in high school!"? I do. When I got to high school, I discovered that it wasn't really all that it was cracked up to be. Do you remember when you were in high school and you thought, "I just can't wait until I get to college!"? I do. But as soon as I became a college student, I just kept thinking "I can't wait until I'm married and in my career." I've been thinking about life passing by recently, as the life of my grandfather draws to an end. He's in the hospital and there is no question his days left on earth are few. The topic has been on my mind daily. I'm more or less finished with my college campus experience and in full pursuit of my career. It seems like I keep trying to wish my life away - as if things will get better and better as time moves forward. I'm not complaining. As it turns out, things have gotten better and better! But time would have unfolded whether I was spending my time thinking about it or not.

My point is, why are we prone to spending all our time thinking about what's going to happen tomorrow and next week/month/year? It's a scary routine. Once tomorrow gets here, I might spend all of that day thinking about the future as well. If I'm not careful, this could continue until I don't have any future left to think about! Then I'll be stuck thinking about the past and regretting not soaking up the moments I had. It sounds cliché, but I do it nonetheless!

Stop reading this. Look up. Observe your surroundings. Think about what is happening at this very moment. What do you hear? See? Now think bigger picture. What are your loved ones doing right now? What blessings has God given you to enjoy this very moment? Don't miss the miracle of right now. (I don't mean go and do something crazy that you'll regret. Living IN the moment, doesn't mean living FOR the moment).

Life isn't a checklist. It's kind of like a book. If I sit down and just try to turn pages and get through chapters, it isn't fulfilling. At the end of the book, chances are I didn't get much out of it. When I read for the experience, it's much more fulfilling and enjoyable. So spend some time thinking about today. Look around and appreciate the beauty of the gifts God has given you right now. Enjoy this moment - this breath. You only get one chance.

Way-FM Concert in FL
Way-FM Concert in FL
Just when I thought summer was over, I got to hold onto it a little longer. All of us YC guys ventured down to the hot and sticky weather of Fort Myers, FL on September 10th to get ready for the 88.7 Way-FM concert we did with BarlowGirl and The Afters. I've never been that far south before in Florida, but boy is was HOT AND HUMID. Chad and Alan both grew up in Fort Myers, so they were fine, but Caleb and I weren't so used to the constant state of sweat!

It was a great trip though since we got to hang out at Chad's house for 3 days - he has a beautiful house to say the least :) And then the Way-FM concert at McGregor Baptist Church on Sept. 11 was incredible! Seriously one of the best times I've had performing. Watching the crowd sing along to "Give It All to You" blew me awayl!!! To everyone in Fort Myers who came out to the concert, THANKS FOR MAKING OUR NIGHT! We hope we blessed yours as well.

The day after the concert we met up with one of Yellow Cavalier's biggest fans: Taylor Mould! We got to meet her and her brother Marshall. They were super cool and Taylor said she's constantly reading the blog updates, so I just had to name-drop her! (Hope you enjoy the signed tshirts and CD's Taylor).

That about sums up our Florida trip - enjoy the photos below. More blogs to come later this week.

Stubbing Your Toe
Stubbing Your Toe
I've been thinking about emotions. Everyone has them. When you stub your toe, the frustration you feel that the table leg was in your walking path is probably stronger than the physical pain you're experiencing, right? Lately I've been learning (or trying to learn) how to express my emotions in a positive way...a way that would benefit others. These emotions can be anything...frustration, anger, jealousy, etc... The more I've thought about it, the more I've realized that showing emotions in a self-gratifying way is exactly what a child does when he/she is throwing a selfish fit!

I'm learning it's important to ask yourself what it is that you're feeling before you react to a situation. Think about it. Write down what's going through your mind. Try to put your finger on what you feel before you react and do or say something that would hurt someone else. (You obviously won't do all of this if you've only stubbed your toe, ha!) It'll give you some sense of peace just understanding which emotion you're experiencing and it'll make you feel good to know that you're controlling it - not the other way around!

Once you understand what you're feeling, respond to the situation accordingly. Be gracious. If you do that, you won't regret saying or doing something you didn't mean to. I'm obviously not an expert on any of this. I'm dealing with my thoughts and feelings about things just like you're dealing with yours! I'm only as educated about this topic as a basic college psychology course...and that was like two years ago! I've forgotten it all J

You shouldn't avoid expressing emotions all together, just ways that could be harmful to others. There are lots of different ways to express yourself, and it's probably different for everyone. If you're mad, taking a drive and screaming in your car can be a great vehicle for expressing emotion (no pun intended...). If you're confused, write down your questions. If you're frustrated, make a list of everything that annoys you. If you're sad, rent a sad movie and let yourself cry. If you haven't cried in a while, it might do you good! You'll feel so much better if something is consistently getting you down. Follow Christ's example. Jesus had to bear human emotions. When he was "dealing" he would go into the garden alone and pray.

Once you've done something to express emotions in a non-hurtful way, forget it! Go do something fun. Do something to take your mind off of it. Jesus spent time alone, but he also spent a great amount of time with is inner-circle. Spend time with people that lift you up, and love you. Laugh a lot, smile even more, and trust that God is using these emotion-causers in your life to grow you and make you stronger - even if it is just stubbing your toe.

Life = Risk
Life = Risk
"If you don't risk anything, you risk even more."

Beneath the surface of our sometimes conservative, play-it-safe mentality, we all have some kind of proneness toward "risk." If this weren't true in America, thousands of people would stop auditioning for American Idol, stock market tickers wouldn't scroll across our news channels, and ESPN wouldn't televise world poker tournaments. Life without risk is dull, and void of purpose.

We like taking risks - or if nothing else, we're fascinated with the concept of risk. Why? I think it's because of what comes after risk. It's human nature to want answers. We yearn to know what happens next. We desire to know if we "have what it takes." The only way to find out if success or failure follows our preparation is to take that risk.

Outside of coincidence, success cannot be achieved with out taking a jump. Think of your favorite public figure. There was a time when your favorite musician had to stand in front of a judge of talent for the first time. There came a point when your favorite athlete had to strap on a uniform and play in front of a scout. The last politician you voted for once had to prepare and deliver his or her first campaign speech.

Is it scary? Yes, but I believe it's supposed to be! No one ever discovered new land without first being willing to lose sight of the shore. I'm learning that if we want to chase our dream, we have to ultimately be willing to sacrifice what we are and what we have, for who we want to become.

Oh...and watch this... Life = Risk

On Air with The Current FM
On Air with The Current FM
Last week we traveled across the state of Virginia to hit up The Current FM in Virginia Beach. We talked with radio personalities Amanda & Leo about the new record, about what God has been doing in our lives, and about...Cinnabons (which are mighty tasty). We played acoustic versions of "Give It All to You" and "Freedom Into Slavery" live on the air! It was a great morning and we wanna thank The Current FM for having us on the show.

- Kyle
It was an early morning, but they fed us Cinnabons during commercial breaks

Sense of Self
Sense of Self
Why do we have friends? It seems like somewhere inside all of us, we long for company. We long for acceptance in the setting of a community. However, sometimes we isolate ourselves. More than often, it's not even on purpose. We mask it behind excuses. I know I do. We turn down people's company because we're too busy. We turn people down because we view the world differently. We even turn down invitations because people annoy us.

When we spend an inordinate amount of time alone, we lose sight of who we are. Our self-identity becomes distorted. This is because when we are sequestered, we have nothing by which to measure ourselves. We can only truly grasp the essence of our personality when we contextualize it with other people's personalities. Seeing strengths in others help us realize our personal weaknesses - and it works both ways.

It's not that we are to conform to those we are associated with or try to impress those in our "circle." But in order to grow, it's imperative to have strong people in your life to help you along. They see things in your life that you might miss. When we can clearly identify our own strengths, we are better suited to use those strengths to enhance our lives and the lives of others.

Most importantly, spending time with others, and learning our strengths pleases our creator. He gave each of us a special uniqueness. It's good to learn about yourself, because you are God's creation! It doesn't mean you're self-absorbed, it only means you want to be self-aware - in order to better serve God and those around you.

The only way to tap into your uniqueness is to learn about yourself. The only way to do THAT, is to stop looking inward and start focusing more on those around you.

What Happens When We Fail
What Happens When We Fail
Scripture makes it very clear that we all will fail. I am certain most of you have heard the verse "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God". This is not a matter of if but when.

The ultimate cause and effect here is a matter of eternity. It is very simple. God is a perfect God and therefore He can not tolerate imperfection. However, He loved us so much that He was willing to send His own Son to suffer and endure death so that we could take on His perfection as our own.

The question today though is more regarding the daily or constant struggle with failure. We all have weaknesses. We all will fall to them...but what then?

Paul tells us that "It is in our weakness, that He is made strong."

In the light of this Biblical principle, the answer to "what now?" is shown. I'm sure you have heard it said, "When you fall, get up and try again." Although this makes a great motivational speech or movie moment, I don't think it is perfectly aligned with Scripture. It seems that what Paul was saying here is that we have the opportunity to allow God to show His great strength when we fail. Therefore, the Bible tells us this, "When you fall, it is because you were attempting to stand on your own. Stop that!! Let God pick you up and learn to rely on His strength to remain standing." Now this may not flow as well or sound as good but it definitely works much better!

This would be pointless if you did not understand what that looks like in your life.

When you wake up in the morning, typically you begin to prepare for your day. Hopefully, you take a shower (if needed), you eat breakfast, you brush your teeth and get dressed. There may be other things that you do but for the most part this probably sounds familiar to you. What are you doing when you do these things? Answer...you are preparing for your day. Whatever it may hold, you know that you will need energy so you eat. You know you will most likely be around other people so you shower, brush your teeth and put on clothes because without those things you are a smelly naked person with bad breath! You would be unprepared to say that least!! Therefore, if we are incapable of standing on our own strength, then we MUST add another element to our daily preparation. Not only will this step be important but it will be the MOST important preparation you make for the day. We MUST spend time with the Lord and beg Him to be our strength for the day. For Him to go ahead of us and fight our battles for us is the ONLY way that we can find victory over our failures. He WANTS to be the Victor. He WANTS to show His power over our weaknesses and failures. However, He will NOT come to the battlefield unless called upon. It is only your asking that brings Him to your side.

Intentions vs. Intentional
Intentions vs. Intentional
Having good intentions and being intentional aren't the same thing.

The founders of America could have just had good intentions and hoped America turned out a successful democracy. However, they were intentional. They didn't just believe/hope/dream. They were intentional. They acted. How?

They pushed themselves to go beyond their means. They directed America on a path to becoming (arguably) the greatest nation in the world, by setting up an unbeatable model of democracy. This came from making good decisions. This concept applies to organizations, teams and individuals. Direction, NOT intention, determines where you'll end up. You can hope and dream and believe all you want, but if the decisions you're making on a daily basis don't reflect where you want to ultimately be in life, then you're on you way to ...well...somewhere else.

Rather than having good intentions alone, make good decisions.

Good intentions and being intentional aren't the same thing.

Happy 4th of July! This past weekend we performed at Liberty University for the event Celebrate America. Thomas Road Baptist Church sponsors the all day extravaganza in Lynchburg, VA, which ends with a pretty wicked fireworks show. All of us guys have attended Liberty University in the past, so it felt good to perform for a bunch of our friends and biggest supporters! Thank you to everybody who came out and made our night rockin' :) Enjoy the photos below (thanks for snapping shots Ashley Albury!)

At the End of the Day...
At the End of the Day...
Sometimes we can get caught up in things that are not all that significant. This probably does not come as a surprise to you. You either know exactly what I am talking about or you are unaware that it is even a struggle...but it is a struggle...always...for everyone.

Last night I was laying on the couch watching television with my wife and my dog. I realized that there is no where else that I would rather be and nothing more that I could ask for.

Ambitions and goals are great but at the end of the day...it's God, family and the assurance that if tomorrow never comes, this day you remembered what really mattered.

Welcome to King of Prussia
Welcome to King of Prussia
King of Prussia, PA - where you at??!!! I felt some hometown pride this weekend when we did a concert at my home church in Pennsylvania. We played a show on May 24 at Hope Community Church, and the energy in the room was contagious. It felt good to be home, and I think PA might have some of YC's most energetic and entertaining fans! We appreciate everyone who came out to the show - you guys made our night! :) Now you better get ready for an EPIC picture post from the concert.

Blown Away!
Blown Away!
I'm taking an online class right now on the Gospel of John. Going into it, I had no idea how much I'd enjoy this! When I take a look at my own life and think about all of the attributes that I want to have and be said of me, the list looks something like this:

Passion, Commitment, Patience, Wisdom, Integrity, Loyalty, Discipline, Dedication, Selflessness...the list goes on and on.

When I hold up my list to the life of Christ, I'm blown away at how He's undoubtedly all of these things and more. He never fails. He's never selfish. He doesn't quit. He doesn't let his loved ones down. I always heard growing up that Jesus was "perfect" and "holy," but studying His words and actions in the Gospel of John in detail has made me grasp that in a new way.

Why John? I think I love John because it's such a diverse portrayal of Jesus. While the primary audience of John is probably the Jewish people, His words resonate with the world to a greater degree I think...more so than the other Gospels of Matthew (written directly to the Jews), Mark (written to the Romans), and Luke (written to the greeks). Writing a book to the entire world? That's a daunting task! Imagine writing a book in hopes that the entire world would read and relate to it. That doesn't sound like a walk in the park.

My favorite thing about Jesus in the book of John is that He lives out Acts 1:8 right here in chapters 3 & 4 of John! Acts 1:8 tells us to evangelize in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost part of the earth, right? Jesus totally backs up what he calls us to by doing it himself!! He ministers to Nicodemus in Jerusalem, He ministers to the Judeans in 4:1-3, He ministers to the Samaritans in 4:4-42, and he heals the nobleman's son at the end of chapter 4 in what could be considered the uttermost part of the earth. Jesus didn't cut corners. He lived out exactly what he calls us to do.

Jesus set the tone for us. He's the rock. He's the standard by which we are to measure ourselves. He was everything he ever said he was. Don't take my word for it. See for yourself!!

GMA Week Mania
GMA Week Mania
We survived our first GMA Week in Nashville! It was a combination of excitement, exhaustion, and pure awesomeness. Let me give you a day by day breakdown of the events that occurred.

Sunday, April 19th

We all drove the 8 hours from Lynchburg, VA to Nashville, TN. It didn't take long for something eventful to happen. Nearly 5 hours into driving, Chad and Allen narrowly escaped a ten car pileup due to God's grace and Chad's wicked driving skills. Caleb and I left later than Chad and Allen did, so we got stuck behind the traffic of the accident. We are so thankful that we were all safe! When we arrived in Nashville, we went downtown to check out the BMI Songwriter Showcase. We got in just in time to see Francessa Battistelli perform an acoustic version of "I'm Letting Go." That girl can SANG. We got to meet her after the showcase and she was so nice and genuine. Caleb and I are big fans so that made our night :)

Monday, April 20th

We sure didn't know what we were getting ourselves into when we woke up at 7am that morning, but by 5pm, we had done 9 interviews and an acoustic showcase for radio programmers. We were dead tired, but it was such a blessing to able to talk with radio, TV, and internet channels/stations about our music and what God has been doing in our lives. What a whirlwind day.

Tuesday, April 21th

We had a live interview with NewReleseTuesday.com on the web. You can watch the interview here. Thank you to the fans who watched it and asked us questions on the air! That night we had band practice with some unbelievably talented musicians to get ready for some upcoming gigs. I can't wait for you guys to see our songs performed live.

Wednesday, April 22nd

In the morning we had some meetings, but then we got to play putt-putt at Opryland. I think we all enjoy putt-putt more than most people, and now Chad, Alan, and Caleb are obsessed with golf. They will not stop talking about it. I have yet to jump on the bandwagon...but I'm sure it will only be a matter of time until I join them on the green. That night we filmed some behind the scenes footage at Sound Kitchen Studio that will give you a glimpse of the recording process and also provide you more knowledge on who we are and what Yellow Cavalier is all about.

Thursday, April 23rd

The night of the Dove Awards! The live show at the Grand Ole Opry was a blast :) My favorite performances of the night were Natalie Grant (she seriously blew the roof off with her voice) with Group 1 Crew, Brandon Heath, and Steven Curtis Chapman (there was not a dry eye in the house after he sang). It was an honor to be in the same room with so many talented musicians who share a deep passion for Jesus Christ. What an amazing night of worship and what a way to cap off GMA Weeek!

Well I think that about sums up our week. If you got any questions about anything that happened that week or want to hear any funny stories...let me know ;) Below are some pictures that Alan's wife, Brycie, snapped of us during the week.

Thankful for Miracles
Thankful for Miracles
I hope you are all enjoying this Good Friday. Take time to reflect on the brutal but beautiful sacrifice that was made for us some 2000 years ago. 3 days from now we will be rejoicing over Jesus' resurrection! Easter is a miracle and our God is still in the business of doing miracles today. Last week I witnessed one.

Over the past year while I have been attending Liberty University, I traveled on the road with a music ministry team called Crimson Flood. At the events we performed at, I've shared a story about a friend of mine named Katie. Katie is a sophomore in high school in Pennsylvania. Katie was diagnosed with RND: Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy. What first started as some mild back spasms grew into intense pain that would seize her entire body. She described it as a knife going into your back - no exaggeration. This pain took over Katie's world. No longer could she function like a normal teenager. Say goodbye to a normal school schedule, a social life - say goodbye to having control over your body. It was horrible.

What amazed me through Katie's struggle was her perseverance and faith. I came home over winter break and visited Katie during church. When I found her she was outside the children's wing, sitting in the hallway, and crying from the pain spasm. After this lasted for a few minutes, she got up, went back into the classroom, and served God's children. Katie didn't let this pain define her. She still allowed herself to be used by God despite her circumstances.

Katie's story was heard by thousands of people, and she has encouraged so many. For months at a time now, Katie and I have been praying for God to heal her completely by the time Crimson Flood came to my home church to do a concert in Pennsylvania. We prayed that by the time I got there to sing, that she would be healed and that we could praise God for what He had done.

A week before I arrived for the concert, Katie shared her story in church that Sunday. She described how she had been pain free for the last few days. By the time I arrived in Pennsylvania for the concert, Katie had been pain free for over 10 days! She was able to clap and dance during the worship that night. God blew me away, and I was in awe of how faithful He was to our prayers. If you are struggling - run to Him. He knows your pain better than anyone else.

2 Corinthians 1:4-5 says "He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort."

- Kyle

Patiently Excited
Patiently Excited
The further we get into this amazing process the more difficult it becomes to wait on God's timing. I know that He is in control and I truly want nothing more than what He has for me and when He has it for me. However, sometimes I find myself wishing that those things were coming just right around the corner!!

We never know what God has planned but we can know that He has something planned, and that whatever it is, it is our best possible existence.

I will find my peace in that assurance.

Peace

-Alan

Weakness
Weakness
"My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness."

- 2 Corinthians 12:9

My voice has been pretty much gone for the past week, which can be highly frustrating when you're supposed to be rehearsing like crazy. I think the biggest struggle for me is when I have to perform and I don't feel 100%. I get mad at myself, and then my pride comes in and tells me that God can't use me 'cause I'm not at my best. I came across this verse and I thought to myself "what am I thinking?!" God can use me whenever He wants and in whatever condition I am in. It's not about me, it's not about how good or bad I feel - it's about Him. This verse of Scripture got me through this week. How amazing to know that God can use our weakness for His glory. So many times I find myself trying to be the best I can be in order to please Him, and I'm so missing the point by doing that. God wants me - my failures, my screw ups, my WEAKNESSES...he wants me. Reread that verse again - wow we have a good God.

- Kyle

Friend or Acquaintance?
I've been learning a lot about relationships. Not just romantic relationships, but just all relationships in general. Relationships with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, parents, romantic interests, etc...

Where do you draw the line between an "acquaintance" and a "friend"? What does one have to do or become to be considered a friend of someone? I suppose friendship is just the mutual affection exchanged between two people, exclusive of romance or family relations. But as I walk around campus at school, I see a lot of people that I "know." I like them. They like me. Does that mean we're friends? Do I have hundreds of friends, or are they just acquaintances?

I never looked at my relationships with others as something I had to maintain until now. As I get older, and as I meet more people, I'm finding it more and more difficult to keep up with everyone. I realize it's the same for others too, so when people go out of their way to maintain a relationship with me I feel honored. In the process of maintaining relationships, you find out who really cares about you.

Average friends catch up. GOOD friends keep up.

Those are my random thoughts for the day...haha.

-Caleb

We are Sore All Over!
So Chad and I have begun quite a journey of physical endurance, mental determination, and bone crushing PAIN! The source of this journey is none other than P90x (type it in google and look it up yourself!) These videos are making us work our tails off but we are hoping for great results :) I'm hoping the fact that my body is sore in places I didn't know could be sore is a good thing haha. We've been working out in Chad's living room and I'm just waiting for someone to walk in right as we are doing karate kicks. It's a 3 month program and who knows if we're gonna last - we are determined so far tho! Keep us accountable!!! I'll try to upload a picture or video of us doing our grueling exercises so check back soon ;)

As for myself, life is GREAT!! I moved back to the the burg, as in Lynchburg Virginia, to be with the rest of the guys of Yellow Cavalier. Its been awesome getting to know the guys better and just see Gods hand work over this group. Ahhh.. Can you tell I'm excited?!?! Cuz I am.. Seriously.. ha...

Welp, gotta get back to work!! God Bless

Mini Update
It's almost the weekend - hang in there! Tomorrow us guys in YC are getting together to rehearse some songs and hopefully write some new ones. Be praying for us during this time if you could. We're excited to see what God is gonna do and where He will lead us. It's all for Him! Have a great night :)
